WEED & ALGAE CONTROL COMMITTEE MEETINGS: Regularly scheduled meetings of the Weed & Algae Control Committee are held at 4:30 PM on the first Tuesday of every month at Gulliver's Landing beginning August 7, 2012. See the Committees page for minutes of past meetings. ** PLEASE NOTE THE JANUARY 1, 2013 MEETING IS RESCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2013 AT 4:30 PM. **
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2013 - Member Social Meeting at Gulliver's Landing at 7:00 PM. We are organizing a social gathering for our members on February 7th. Tickets for our fundraiser on April 22nd (see below) will be available for purchase. We will provide light appetizers by Gulliver's and guest speakers in a social setting. Come mingle with us!
MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2013 - LWA Social and Fundraising Event at Gulliver's Landing. Tickets must be purchased in advance for this event (200 tickets will be sold). Ticket cost is $50/person. Ticket holders are entitled to a buffet style dinner and open bar from 6 PM to 10 PM, as well as entry into cash drawings, and participation in a silent and live auction that evening. Gulliver's Landing is graciously donating their facility and staff for this event. It is expected to be a fun social gathering to help LWA raise funds for the extensive Lake Management Development project that is currently underway. Past Events & Meetings 2012
Thursday, September 27, 2012 - The Annual Member Meeting was held at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 27th at Gulliver's Landing (in the banquet room). The 2013 Board of Directors election took place at this meeting. There were three (3) Director positions up for election to serve a 3-year term from January 2013 through December 2015. There was a unanimous vote to re-elect the three (3) Board of Directors nominated on the slate who were Russ Graveen, Sherri Wagner, and Ken Wilk. The Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, October 2nd to elect the 2013 Officers. See meeting minutes from the annual meeting posted on our Board of Directors page.
Thursday, June 7, 2012 - There was a General Membership Meeting, which was open to the public, at 7:00 PM at the Rib Mountain Town Hall. At this meeting we announced plans and details of theLake Wausau Evaluation Project. Click here for the meeting agenda.
Saturday, May 19, 2012 - The Citizen Lakes Monitoring Training was at 10 am at Mission Lake Shelter as referenced in the first newsletter for the Eastern Lakes Project. Learn more about Citizen Lakes Monitoring from the DNR website.
Friday, May 11, 2012 - 2012 Wisconsin River Clean Up ~ was a success for the 13th year in a row. Thank you to everyone who participated in this annual event!
Saturday, April 21, 2012 - The Wisconsin River Citizen Group Summit took place at the Schmeeckle Reserve in Stevens Point. River Alliance gathered 20 citizen advocates representing 8 Wisconsin River citizen groups to build community amount the groups, share success stories and struggles, and discuss policy recommendations with state legislators as they pertain to the Wisconsin River. Thursday, March 29, 2012 - 2nd Wisconsin River Water Quality Improvement Symposium was held at UW Stevens Point - Dreyfus University Center - Alumni Room. Attendees learned about the Wisconsin River, the monitoring effort that is underway, and what's being done to improve its condition; held discussion about the future of the Wisconsin River; met with others that have an interest in the Wisconsin River; and learned how to become involved in the future of the Wisconsin River. Thursday, March 22, 2012 - The Red Cedar Conference was held in Menomonie (UW Stout) benefiting all watersheds in Wisconsin. There was a very diverse group of presenters and subject matters, but all of them focused on finding ways to improve our water resources. For more information, please visit their website.
February 1, 2012 - Lake Planning Grant Application Deadline- Applications were timely filed. We will be notified of grant awards in late March. Thanks to everyone for the hard work and efforts to get the applications filed, and for all our financial supporters and contributors! We are looking forward to creating a healthy lake for everyone!
January 12, 2012 - BOD Meeting: There was a Board of Directors meeting at 6:30pm on January 12 at Gulliver's Landing at which the resignation of two board members was accepted, and the appointment of two new board members was approved. Please see meeting minutes below.
January 12, 2012 - Weed & Algae Control Committee: There was a Weed & Algae Control Committee at 6:00pm on Thursday, January 12th at Gulliver's Landing. The primary agenda for this meeting is to discuss progress on the funding campaign for the comprehensive lake evaluation project to ensure the February 1st deadline is met. While funding commitments are still in process, the deadline appears to be on schedule. Additional discussion took place regarding the January 19th presentation which is intended specifically for municipal leaders and others with significant impact in the community.
January 3, 2012 - LWA representatives met with the Town of Rib Mountain to present information regarding the comprehensive lake evaluation plans and to seek their support in the project. Town officials were receptive to the project and offered a commitment to fund $5,000 - $7,000 of this initial project.

December 19, 2011 - LWA representatives met with the City of Wausau to present information regarding the comprehensive lake evaluation plans and to seek their support in the project. City officials were receptive to the project and are willing to work with us and support the lake study. Further meetings with the City Finance Committee are pending - additional information will be shared with members at a later date.
December 15, 2011 - Weed & Algae Control Committee: There was a Weed & Algae Control Committee meeting at 6:00pm on Thursday, December 15th at Gulliver's Landing. The main objective for this meeting was to review the status of the lake study project, create an action plan for funding the project and meeting the February 1st grant deadline, and determine how we will work together to execute the action plan.
November 30, 2011 - DNR Meeting: Members of the Board of Directors met with Buzz Sorge (DNR), Scott Provost (DNR), and Nancy Turyk (UW Stevens Point - Water Resource Scientist) to discuss deatils of the comprehensive study and actions necessary for meeting the February 1, 2012 grant deadline. Members of our Board and the Weed & Algae Control Committee will be working with the DNR and UW Stevens Point faculty in the coming weeks to develop a lake study proposal for submission with our grant application.
October 25, 2011 - BOD Meeting: There was a Board of Directors meeting on October 25, 2011 at which Officers were elected for 2012. Elected officers were Russ Graveen, President; Nathan Bircher, Vice President; Kathy Beatty, Secretary; and Theresa Graveen, Treasurer. The Board also approved proceeding with a comprehensive lake study to be managed by the Weed and Algae Control Committee, working with other committees as needed. Please see meeting minutes below.
October 7, 2011 - DNR Meeting: Members of the Board of Directors met with Buzz Sorge of the DNR to discuss an Aquatic Plant Management (APM) study. We met Buzz at Gulliver's Landing and set out for a tour of the lake discussing concerns regarding the quality of the water and pointing out problem areas we were interested in addressing. Buzz shared his thoughts about our management options and discussed resources and grant funding that were available to us in developing a plan. He was very impressed by the size and aesthetics of the lake, and also recognized what a valuable resource the lake is to our community. He's more than willing to work with us and brings to the table technical expertise that is essential in progressing with our goals. Our challenge is to create an awareness and rally strong support from the community. To learn more, see the minutes from this meeting on the Committees page. Over the next few months, the Board of Directors and the Weed and Algae Control Committee will be working diligently to begin putting things in motion as it relates to an APM study on the lake. September 27, 2011 - Annual Member Meeting: The Annual Member Meeting was held at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 27th at Gulliver's Landing (in the banquet room). There were 28 members in attendance. September 22, 2011 - Weed & Algae Control Committee Meeting: There was a Weed & Algae Control meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 22nd at Gulliver's Landing (in the banquet room). This meeting was a follow up to our previous meeting held on Tuesday, August 9th (see minutes from that meeting below). Scott Provost from the DNR attended this meeting and presented information on Aquatic Plant Management (APM) including key mangement options, where to focus efforts, and how to obtain funding. Scott was very informative and provided the Association with great direction and has been very helpful in providing additional resources for us. Please also watch the Wisconsin River Flyover video that provides a special illustration of where phosphorus is coming from in our river system. Note the phosphorus levels will change a little next year after the 2011 data is proofed and analyzed. Special thanks to partners at UW-Extension Lakes, Stevens Point, and specifically Amy Kowalski, for putting this video together. Many thanks go out to Scott for all his efforts and support of our Association. This meeting was open to general membership... we thank the 25 members who participated in this meeting. August 16, 2011 - BOD Meeting: There was a Board of Director's meeting at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, August 16th at Gulliver's Landing (in the banquet room). July 31, 2011 - Annual Member Picnic: There was a Member Picnic at Oak Island Park on July 31, 2011 at 1:00 PM. The picnic was a success... highlights from the picnic are below, and more photos can be found on at the Photo Gallery. We hope to have an even bigger crowd next year. Many of us discussed having a summer social on the sand bar rather than a picnic at a facility. We know our days on the water are precious, and by gathering on a sand bar we can enjoy socializing in the water! If you have thoughts or ideas as to how we can get members together, please e-mail us. We'll be planning future events and look forward to your input...
Thanks to everyone who attended the 2011 LWA Member Picnic! There were 27 members in attendance and we had a great time meeting new people and catching up with friends and neighbors...
 
We enjoyed brats, hamburgers and hot dogs donated by two of our board members, and many wonderful salads and side dishes brought by those who attended the picnic... so thanks to the many of you who provided food for this event!

June 21, 2011 - Open/Social Forum: There was an Open/Social Forum held at Gulliver's Landing Banquet Room on June 21st at 6:30 PM to allow members to deliver their vote on revisions to the By-Laws (see the About page of this website for a copy of the revised By-Laws), to visit with other members, as well as to learn more about the Association and its goals and objectives. We had a great turn out - many thanks to everyone who attended and to everyone who submitted their votes! The revised By-Laws passed 38 to 1. With the revised By-Laws, we're now able to begin writing and submitting grant applications which is the first process of our Lake Clean up efforts. We'll keep you posted as things progress in this area. Our thanks to Gulliver's Landing for the use of their banquet room for this meeting!
May 13, 2011 - 2011 Wisconsin River Clean Up (click here for news coverage on this event): The Association sponsored this annual event which was a huge success! All who participated had a great time and retreived significant debris from the river way and shorelines. Many thanks go out to our youth, Association members, and others in the community who participated in this very important event.
March 6, 2011 - Lake Cleanup Project (click here for News Recap )... Many thanks to VEOLIA for donating a dumpster for this project! This event and the dumpster donation was a tremendous help in keeping our Lake clean after the ice fishing season.
